Jagran Times, Korba/Raipur, October 31: Balco Medical Centre (BMC), a unit of Vedanta Medical Research Foundation (VMRF) and one of the leading cancer treatment institutions in Central India, performed the Bhumi Pujan ceremony for Phase 2 of its expansion at its campus in Nava Raipur, Chhattisgarh, in the presence of Minister O. P. Choudhary. On the occasion, the hospital also launched the advanced Total Body Irradiation (TBI) technique in its Department of Radiation Oncology.

This specialised radiation treatment technology is being introduced for the first time in Chhattisgarh.Under the Phase 2 expansion plan, the proposed addition of 205 beds, along with the existing 170 beds, will take the hospital’s total capacity to 375 beds. The expanded facility will offer comprehensive cancer care along with specialised medical services in cardiology, orthopaedics, neurology, nephrology and medical gastroenterology. This expansion is expected to play a significant role in improving access to specialised healthcare services across the region and providing integrated treatment for patients with complex medical conditions. The expansion plan also includes a nursing hostel within the campus and a proposed 300-bed accommodation facility for patients and their families.
This facility will provide lodging for patients and their relatives during the course of treatment. It will particularly benefit families travelling from remote areas who need to stay close to the hospital throughout the treatment period.Speaking on the occasion, Minister O. P. Choudhary said, “Quality healthcare services are essential for the development of any state, and Chhattisgarh is continuously investing in strengthening its healthcare infrastructure. The Phase 2 expansion of BMC is in line with this commitment. It will expand access to specialised medical services and advanced treatment facilities in Central India while also strengthening the region’s capabilities in healthcare services and medical education.
This will reduce the need for people from our state to travel outside Chhattisgarh for treatment or training. I congratulate VMRF on this important initiative. ”Jyoti Agrawal, Chairperson of VMRF, said, “VMRF was established eight years ago with the vision that no individual should be deprived of quality healthcare because of their place of residence or financial circumstances. This vision has guided BALCO Medical Centre since its inception, and we remain committed to realising it every day. The Phase 2 expansion is another significant milestone in this journey. With the expansion of BMC, our responsibility also grows to ensure that every new speciality and technological advancement reaches the patients who need it the most. I am grateful to Minister O. P. Choudhary for his support. I would also like to thank our doctors, nurses and all employees whose dedication has made this progress possible.”BMC has introduced the Extended Source-to-Skin Distance Total Body Irradiation technique using its TrueBeam Linear Accelerator. In this technique, the patient is positioned at a relatively greater distance from the radiation source, allowing the entire body to be treated with radiation within a single treatment field.TBI is a specialised form of radiation therapy used to prepare eligible patients for stem cell transplantation.
It may be included in the treatment of certain blood cancers and non-malignant blood disorders, including sickle cell disease and thalassemia, when a stem cell transplant is recommended. For patients suffering from blood cancers, TBI can help target cancer cells throughout the body. This includes areas such as the brain, where achieving adequate treatment through chemotherapy alone may be challenging in certain circumstances.
